Acknowledgment of the deed is the verification of the signature on the deed.  Acknowledgment is usually by a notary public

 

A deed does not have to be acknowledged to be legal.

Most county deed offices require acknowledgment before a deed will be accepted for recordation.

Acknowledgment prevents forged and fraudulently induced documents from taking effect.
