A Freehold Estate is an estate of uncertain duration.

A freehold estate lasts at least a person's lifetime.

A freehold estate may terminate at a person's death (life estate).

A freehold estate may continue after a person's death (fee simple estate).

The termination date of a freehold estate cannot be determined by use of a calendar.  A leasehold estate is not a freehold estate since it terminates on a definite date that can be marked on a calendar and may last less than the leaseholder's lifetime.
